The Mercor AI interview is run by an AI interviewer that asks role-specific questions, usually for about 20 minutes. Official interviews are recorded, and you can retake one up to three times. Mercor itself offers free practice interviews that you can take as often as you like. Its rules do not let large language models write your answers. Checked 30 October 2026.
What Mercor is and how the interview works
Mercor is a hiring platform for contract work, including AI-related roles. Its AI interview help page says an AI interviewer asks role-specific questions, and that interviews are recorded and transcribed so Mercor can evaluate candidates. Checked 30 October 2026.
The page gives these details.
- Length: most interviews take about 20 minutes, though some are shorter or longer.
- Language: English unless stated otherwise. Captions are on by default and can be turned off.
- Type: some interviews are technical, and others test language or reasoning.
- Screen sharing: it may be required, and only full-screen sharing is supported.
- Whiteboard: some interviews include one, and it saves automatically.
- Recording: official interviews are recorded, on video and audio, and transcribed. You cannot download your recording or transcript.
- Retakes: you can retake an official interview up to three times across related applications. A retake resets your application progress, and the page asks you to keep retakes for technical problems.
- Browser: the page recommends the latest Chrome. It lists Edge and Safari as supported, and Firefox and mobile browsers as not supported.
Mercor’s free practice interviews
The same page says practice interviews are free, are not tied to any application, can be taken as many times as you like and are not shared with companies. Use one first, because it shows you the format with nothing at stake. Then use a mock interview to rehearse the answers you want to give.
What Mercor says about AI help
The page says you must follow Mercor’s LLM Usage Policy. It says grammar and wording checks are acceptable, and that you may not use large language models to write your responses. We could not confirm from Mercor’s own page what happens if the rules are broken. It also says you may talk about your general experience, but you may not share specific questions or screenshots, so do not post them.
Questions of the kind you may be asked
These are practice questions of a common type, not questions taken from Mercor.
- Tell me about a project you are proud of. A good answer names your role, what you did and what changed because of it.
- Explain a concept from your field to someone new to it. A good answer is clear, uses a plain example and checks that the listener followed.
- How would you check whether an AI answer in your field is correct? A good answer names what you would verify, which sources you trust and when you would say you are not sure.
- Describe a time you worked to a tight standard or a detailed guideline. A good answer shows care, attention to detail and how you handled a rule that was unclear.
- For technical roles, solve a small problem and talk through it. A good answer says what you are doing and why while you do it.
Set up your space
- Use a computer with a camera and microphone that you have tested.
- Keep your full face in view and speak clearly.
- Choose a quiet room. Mercor recommends headphones and an external microphone.
- Avoid long silences, because an AI interviewer may treat one as the end of your answer.
- Pen, paper and a calculator may be useful for some interviews, so read your instructions.

Before you go on
PrepHint AI also has live answers. Mercor’s rules do not allow AI-written answers in its interview, and we could not confirm from Mercor’s own page what happens if they are broken. Whether you follow those rules is your decision and your risk. PrepHint AI supplies the software and is not liable for what happens on another platform.
PrepHint AI also works as an interview copilot on video calls, wherever AI help is allowed.
PrepHint AI is not connected to Mercor. For other platforms, see the guide to AI-training job interviews.
